Getting around - cycle paths and improvements

Herefordshire is a great place to get out and about on a bike. Whether you want to commute to work or enjoy a leisurely scenic bike ride, we have a number of cycle routes around the county, as well as network routes passing through the area.

We also offer Park and Cycle facilities if you live further afield but would still like to cycle for your daily commute.

Cycling in Hereford

Hereford has over 20 miles of traffic free paths so it's a great city to explore by bike.

Did you know you can cycle through High Town between 4.30pm and 10.30am? Outside of those times please wheel your bike through the city centre even when you are heading to and from our free bike parking.

Look out for local signage which will tell you where you can and where you shouldn't ride your bike. The Hereford Mini Map also has full details of all of the traffic free routes so you can plan your journey safely.

Cycle route improvements

We receive many requests for improvements to our cycling infrastructure. The number and scope of these requests greatly exceeds the funds available so we have to prioritise improvements to the schemes. Our prioritisation process ensures that all requests are considered equally against a cycle scheme assessment and ranking scheme that evaluates Local Transport Plan targets and objectives, the council's strategic network and stakeholder proposals. The assessment also ensures that we consider best practice and partnership working. If you would like more information on this process, please contact us at move@herefordshire.gov.uk

Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal

The redevelopment of the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal will provide a key part of Hereford's walking and cycling network. The Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Trust have an agreement with Sustrans that all their towpaths will be cycle friendly. For further details of their plans and progress, visit the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Trust website.
