The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for learning, development and care of children from birth to five years. All Ofsted registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, pre-schools, nurseries, out of school care and school reception classes.

The guide What to expect in the Early Years Foundation Stage, has been written for parents to help them understand how early years providers support children's learning and development as outlined in the EYFS. This is a valuable resource to share with parents during registration and can also be useful for anyone new to early years.

It is well-known that the first five years of a child's development are crucial to their health, wellbeing, and future outcomes. Ongoing investment in early years research has led to important changes in practice over time. Therefore, it is vital that we continually inform our practice with up-to-date research and guidance.

The Department for Education (DfE) has created free guidance and training for early years practitioners. These resources are excellent for developing practitioners' understanding of the EYFS and their responsibilities within it. A selection of videos further supports understanding, making this a crucial part of any practitioner’s induction.

The Foundation Years website offers the latest news, policy updates, and resources for early years professionals. It's a valuable tool to stay informed and up to date.
