Preschool to reception transition
Successful transition for children from preschool to reception class is crucial to enable children and parents to feel secure in the new environment, and for children to continue to develop and learn effectively. Children and parents need time and opportunities to familiarise themselves with the school environment and to start building relationships with key members of staff. Reception class staff need time to gather important information from each child's preschool or nursery.
Questions can arise at the point of transition about whether some children are ready for school. These are usually about children with summer birthdays, children not yet toilet trained and children with special educational needs or disability. Usually a well-planned transition meeting can resolve these questions and there is additional support for schools and settings in the links on this page.
- Toilet training - Achieving continence is one of many milestones which children are expected to reach before they start school. However, for a number of reasons, a percentage of children may not manage to achieve this prior to starting school. If not managed correctly, wetting and / or soiling problems can cause high levels of stress for children, parents and teaching staff.
