Herefordshire Register of children with disabilities

We have a duty to hold a register of disabled children and young people, in accordance with The Children Act 1989.  Registration is voluntary and is not linked to, or a requirement of, receiving social care services, which are assessed separately.

To be registered, your child must be under 18 years of age and have a physical or learning disability which is likely to have a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out usual day-to-day activities.

We will use the information to:

  • Ask children, parents and carers to help us plan the development of services for disabled children and young people (for example, it will help us to develop appropriate services to meet an individual's assessed needs, in the places where they are most needed)
  • Provide statistical information for planning, monitoring and evaluating services
  • Keep children, parents and carers informed of new or amended services as they become available

Privacy of information

From time to time, general information on the number of disabled children and young people and the area where they live may be published. However, no information that could be used to identify you or your child will ever be made public. Information held on the register will be treated as strictly confidential.

You have a right to access the information we hold on you or on any children you have parental responsibility for, subject to the Data Protection Act 2018. As is the case with any information held by Herefordshire Council, it may be disclosed without consent to safeguard a child, children or an adult who may be at risk of suffering significant harm or to comply with any legal obligation to which the council is subject.

The information you provide will be kept until your child reaches their 18th birthday, and will then be deleted. Individuals have a number of rights under data protection law, including the right to rectify inaccurate data, to request access to your records, and to withdraw your consent. You also have a right to make a complaint about our handling of your personal data to the Information Commissioner’s Office. You can contact the council’s Data Protection Officer by telephone 01432 260616 or email informationgovernance@herefordshire.gov.uk

Information held on the register will include:

  • Child or young person's name
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Religion
  • Home address
  • Contact details
  • Names of parents / guardians / carers
  • Information in relation to the child's disability and services accessed

In order to comply with the new Data Protection Act regulations, we need to ensure that we have informed consent for all existing and new registrants. We are therefore asking parents and carers of children with disabilities to register or re-register for inclusion using the link below. Please remember that registration is completely voluntary and it is absolutely fine if you would prefer for your child's name not to be included. Registration is not linked to or a requirement of receiving social care services.
