Report a discarded needle

Please do not touch any discarded needle or syringe.

If you find one somewhere public, such as in a street or park, call us immediately on 01432 261800.
We will arrange to have it quickly and safely removed.

If you find a syringe, needle or drug paraphernalia in the grounds of a school or other educational establishment, report it to the staff there. They are trained to safely dispose of these items.

What should I do if I injure myself with a used needle?

If you pierce or puncture your skin with a used needle, follow this first aid advice immediately:

  • Encourage the wound to bleed, ideally by holding it under running water
  • Wash the wound using running water and plenty of soap
  • Do not scrub the wound while you're washing it
  • Do not suck the wound
  • Dry the wound and cover it with a waterproof plaster or dressing

You should also seek urgent medical advice as you may need treatment to reduce the risk of getting an infection:

  • Contact your employer's Occupational Health service if you injure yourself at work or
  • Call your GP, NHS 111 or go to the nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department
