Home improvement and adaptations

The Herefordshire Handyperson Scheme is provided by Herefordshire Council's You at Home service. All visiting Handyperson staff have been police checked and carry identity cards. Our experienced home improvement team can help you with support and guidance for all home improvements and adaptations. We also sometimes provide financial assistance for small scale emergency repairs. Our handyperson team may be able to help with small adaptations like ramps, half steps, handrails, home safety and security work, and a wide range of small repairs to help you remain independent or to ensure you can return home from hospital. In some cases a small fee will be charged for work undertaken.

The team achieved a Foundation National Home Improvement Agency Quality Mark covering these areas:

  • Handyperson service
  • Funding for repairs and adaptations
  • Support for choice
  • Connecting with health
  • Major adaptation

For further information about these services please email yahreferrals@herefordshire.gov.uk or call 01432 260757.

Disabled Facilities Grant

If you or someone you live with is disabled, a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) may help pay for an adaptation like showers and stairlifts. DFGs are means tested grants which may be awarded for adaptations to help people access facilities in their home, generally following an Occupational Therapy assessment. For further information or to make a referral please contact 01432 260101.
