Volunteering at Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre

Play a part in Herefordshire's history!

Volunteers play an increasingly important part in the life of the archives. We rely on their contribution for a wide range of projects that help to make our archival resources available.

Our volunteers have a wide range of interests and skills. We aim to match these to the activities they are asked to carry out. Volunteers' tasks include cataloguing and indexing collections of archives, repackaging documents protectively, relocating collections within the strongrooms, inputting data and helping with conservation surveys.

All the tasks we ask our volunteers to undertake are incredibly important. Volunteers have a very positive impact on the service we are able to provide. We offer training to volunteers so that they can acquire new skills and enhance the positive impact they make. There are also regular social events so that volunteers can catch up over a slice of cake and cup of tea.

We encourage volunteers to establish a regular pattern of work so that proper preparation can be made for them. As a volunteer you can offer as much or as little time as you are able to. Most of our volunteers join us for a half day a week but this is flexible.

We are happy to take short term placements from school or university students as well. Work experience is an increasingly important element of career planning and the range of activities we offer can be helpful for personal development.

The volunteers are very much part of the team and they take great satisfaction from the role they play. If you would like to join them and share your passion for Herefordshire's archives, we would love to hear from you. Get in touch by email with the senior archivist at, or call +44 (0)1432 260750

We can then discuss your availability, how you can help us and how we can offer you a rewarding experience.

There are also other fascinating volunteering opportunities available with Herefordshire Council.
