Volunteers across Herefordshire are coming together to clean up their local communities this spring

Across Herefordshire, purple bags are appearing by the roadside as hundreds of like-minded individuals join forces to help keep their community clear of litter

Litter-picking is simple and anyone can do it to make an immediate and visible difference to their area. According to The Great British Spring Clean, which is running this year until Sunday 2 April, 85% of those who took part last year reported that it made them feel more pride in their local area. And 74% said it improved their mood too.

In Herefordshire, purple bags are provided free of charge for people to collect litter in their community. The bags can then be left in a safe place by the roadside or by a litter bin for collection.

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of purple bags full of litter have already been collected from across the county. The difference is clear, with roadsides and community spaces looking cleaner and greener.

How you can get involved

You can find lots of information about how to organise litter picking in your community on the council website at: www.herefordshire.gov.uk/report-problem/litter/4

Purple bags for your collected litter are available from the council offices at Plough Lane in Hereford or from many of the county's Talk Community hubs.

After your litter pick, you’ll just need to let us know where the purple bags have been left and they will be collected within five working days.

Bin full of litter?

There are around 1,400 litter bins across Herefordshire. We empty all of them regularly, but sometimes they can fill up before we get to them. Please do let us know if you see a full or damaged litter bin. You can report a full or damaged litter bin online. Or you can call us 01432 261800.

Visit herefordshire.gov.uk/recycling for information about responsible waste disposal.

How to report fly-tipping

The council will investigate unlawful waste disposal and fly-tipping cases reported via the council’s website, at www.herefordshire.gov.uk/reportingapp/ or by calling 01432 261761.

The Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean 2023 run until Sunday 2 April. For more details visit https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/home
