Council team hit the road for Recycle Week

Herefordshire Council’s waste team is touring the county as part of the Recycle Week national campaign, which runs 17-23 October.

Members of the council’s waste team have a five-location, week-long tour that will allow them to answer residents’ recycling questions. As well as handing out useful leaflets and guides, the team also has a limited number of reusable bags-for-life to give to early visitors.

As the theme of this year’s national campaign is ‘Let’s get real about recycling’, the Herefordshire team will help people better understand what can and what can’t be recycled. The waste team has a display with them that shows residents the ideal contents for their green bins and recycling sacks.

Waste team on tour

Having kicked off their tour in Ledbury on Tuesday 18 October, the team will be in other market towns on the following dates in October:

Thurs  20       Ross-on-Wye          9am-3pm

Fri      21       Kington                   9am-1pm

Fri      21       Leominster              9am-3pm

Sat     22       Hereford City           9am-4pm

Rebecca Bristow and Craig Cornish, waste transformation officers at Herefordshire Council, are looking forward to getting out and about to meet local residents.

Rebecca says: “Meeting residents is one aspect of my job I really love. It’s great to chat with people about something I feel passionate about. I completely get that what can and can’t be recycled isn’t quite as straightforward as we’d like it to be. So, I’m looking forward to listening to people during Recycle Week to find out their views. It’s all part of our ‘Getting it right’ campaign, which is helping reduce the amount of wrong things people mistakenly put out for recycling.”

Craig adds: “We had an incident just a few weeks ago where firefighters had to be called out after a bin lorry caught fire after someone mistakenly put batteries into their waste. So, as well as helping people understand what we can and can’t recycle, the roadshow gives us a great opportunity to let people know what they can do with batteries and many other items that we unfortunately can’t recycle.”
