Burcott/College Road Bridge

Keeping pedestrians and cyclists moving safely

Since the closure in July, pedestrians and cyclists have been using a temporary route across the nearby Burcott/College Road Bridge in Hereford, with traffic management measures in place to help keep everyone safe.

Our highways team has been closely monitoring the arrangements and listening to feedback from residents, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. As a result, we've introduced a one-way traffic system to improve safety and traffic flow through the area.

The one-way system operates from College Road towards Widemarsh Street. Drivers must follow the signed route and must not attempt to travel in the opposite direction. Driving against the one-way system creates a significant safety risk for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

We have also installed additional barriers along the road bridge to provide greater protection for pedestrians and cyclists using the temporary route.

These measures are designed to improve safety and reduce congestion while we continue working towards a permanent solution.

Working towards a permanent replacement

While these temporary arrangements remain in place, work is continuing on plans to replace the footbridge.

We have submitted a bid to the Department for Transport's Structures Fund to help fund a replacement crossing. Alongside the funding application, we're carrying out detailed technical and feasibility work and working closely with Network Rail to identify the most appropriate long-term solution.

Our aim is to replace the ageing footbridge, which dates back to 1963, with a modern, safe and accessible pedestrian and cycle crossing that meets current standards and provides a reliable connection between College Road and Burcott Road for years to come.

A reminder about safety

The pedestrian bridge remains closed for safety reasons, and part of the road is currently being used to provide a safe route for people walking and cycling.

Unfortunately, we've seen some incidents where drivers have ignored traffic management measures, moved safety barriers or attempted to travel the wrong way through the one-way system. This creates serious risks for pedestrians and everyone using the route.

We would ask everyone travelling through the area to:

  • Follow the one-way system, travelling only from College Road towards Widemarsh Street
  • Never attempt to drive against the flow of traffic
  • Obey all signs, signals and traffic management measures
  • Respect safety barriers and pedestrian routes
  • Take extra care around pedestrians and cyclists
  • Consider using an alternative route where possible

The barriers, signs and traffic controls are there to protect people while these temporary arrangements remain in place.
