Herefordshire Council has been awarded Government Local Electric Vehicles Infrastructure (LEVI) funding to facilitate the provision of on street EV chargepoints for the public.
The chargepoints will be installed on residential streets where there are high proportions of housing with limited or no access to private off-street parking. These chargepoints will help to give confidence to residents without driveways who are thinking of making the switch to an electric vehicle that they will be able to charge it close to their home.
The chargers will be low powered standard or standard plus units (7kW -22kW) which is enough to give a full charge overnight for most electric vehicles. Electricity at all chargepoints will be subject to a fee, payable to the chargepoint operator.
On-street chargepoint locations
Locations across the county are being assessed for suitability. Follow the Herefordshire Council social media accounts for further updates.
Suggest locations for chargepoints
We are looking for potential new locations for public chargepoints, particularly to support residents that have to park on-street. If you own or are thinking of buying an electric vehicle (EV) and would like to suggest a location for a new chargepoint - please complete our chargepoint suggestion form.
Please note, only installs on Herefordshire Council owned land can be considered currently. If you have a location suggestion for somewhere else, such as a supermarket car park, please contact the landowner directly to find out about their EV infrastructure plans.
The selection criteria for the on-street locations
The LEVI funding stipulates where the chargepoints can and can't be installed.
They must:
- Be on land owned by Herefordshire Council
- Be close to domestic properties that do not have off street parking
- Be available to the public 24/7
Locations have been selected using input from the Herefordshire council parking team, highways team, ward councillors, resident requests, and Midlands Connect mapping tools. The site list was also adjusted to improve equity and spread of locations.
All suggested locations will be subject to survey by the chargepoint operator.
Why we are doing this
The council's involvement and ownership of available land will contribute towards the required EV infrastructure being in place to future proof Herefordshire's transport network. This project will increase access to EV chargepoints, providing more opportunity for residents to make the switch to an EV. The project is funded by central government funding and the chargepoint operator, so there is no cost to the council.
The parking bays and chargepoints
The lower powered chargepoints are primarily intended to support residents with no off-street parking by offering longer dwell time charging with lower tariffs close to their homes. They are smaller units, so less obtrusive on the pavement, and will provide a full charge overnight or during longer daytime park and charge sessions. Residents with permits can park and charge for extended periods at any time, and drivers without permits can park for longer charges overnight or outside of permit only hours.
Parking spaces will have bays marked with white lines but they will not be designated as 'EV only' bays and it's not planned to introduce any additional parking restrictions initially. Non-EV parking in the bays will be discouraged but not enforced, with the hope that residents will leave them clear for EV charging. Access and usage will be reviewed regularly.
