We welcome school visits to our public libraries. They are a fantastic way for children to discover what libraries have in store and build a life-long love of reading. We can offer free introductions that help encourage children to explore the library, or you can lead the session yourself.
Our libraries are busy places used by lots of different groups. So please contact us to book your visit in advance to ensure we can accommodate you.
A session usually lasts 45 minutes and can include:
- How to join the library
- How to find books and use the service
- Time for children to browse and help to find books
- Story time
- Chance for children to borrow books on their library cards
Home educated groups are also welcome.
Most of our libraries can host school visits by prior arrangement, apart from Peterchurch, our smallest branch. Some libraries can host school visits on days the library is open, but others can only accommodate groups on closed days. Please contact us for available days and times.

Borrowing books during school visits
If children want to borrow books during their school visit, they must have a valid library card. To ensure no child is inadvertently left out, please encourage parents to join the library or update their child's membership well before the visit to enable them to borrow books on the day. They can do this online - join the library.
Please note: this library card is for the personal use of the child it belongs to and must be managed by the child or their parent, not the school.
Schools cannot borrow items from our public libraries. Instead, we offer a range of targeted services and resources to support schools from our County Libraries Unit, including bespoke school project sets and children's fiction collections.
If you would like one of our librarians to visit your school or to discuss any of our other library services please contact Herefordshire Libraries.
We look forward to seeing you!
