Support to engage, participate and succeed (STEPS)

STEPS is a mentoring service that provides 1:1 support and group activities for children who are experiencing a barrier to education.

The mentor's role is to provide pastoral support and nurturing activities usually outside the school environment, but sometimes within school, and to build up a relationship with the young person.

Through this relationship with a key supportive figure, the mentor can then start to explore the factors that are preventing the young person realising their academic potential.

STEPS also contribute to the Virtual School programme of extra-curricular activities that allow looked after children to take part in new experiences, try new activities and socialise with peers.

There are a range of activities available including:

  • Canoeing
  • Roller skating
  • Into the woods - outdoor activities
  • Bouldering
  • Yoga
  • Pottery
  • Climbing
  • Gorge walking

If you feel your child might be eligible for STEPS support, please contact your child's Virtual School Education Officer (VSEO) or email virtualschool@herefordshire.gov.uk
