Integrated review and progress check at age two

The Integrated Review at Age Two combines a child's EYFS progress check and health review to support their learning, development, health and wellbeing.

What does the integrated review involve?

1. Health and development review

When a child is aged between 24 and 36 months, their parents or carers are invited to attend a health and development review with a health professional, usually a health visitor or community nursery nurse.

During the appointment, parents and carers can:

•    Complete an Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ)
•    Discuss all areas of their child's development
•    Raise any concerns they may have about their child's progress

Health Visitors and early years professionals will share relevant information, with appropriate consent, to provide parents with a holistic view of their child progress. This review helps identify any support needs at an early stage so that appropriate advice and intervention can be provided. 

2. Progress check at age two 

The EYFS Progress Check at Age Two is a statutory requirement where your child's nursery, childminder, or early years provider creates a short written summary of their development between ages 24 and 36 months.

Where possible, the progress check should be completed before the health and development review so that parents and carers can share it with the health visiting team.

The progress check focuses on three prime areas of learning and development:

•    communication and language
•    physical development
•    personal, social and emotional development

The review will include discussion about:

•    The child's strengths
•    Areas where they may need additional support
•    Actions and support that can help them achieve the best possible start in life
The outcome of the progress check should be recorded in the child's Personal Child Health Record (Red Book) and considered as part of the wider health and development review.

Development Matters and Birth to 5 Matters are non-statutory guidance documents and should not be used as assessment checklists or tracking tools.
