Waste strategy and contract

Waste management services contract

Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council waste treatment, recycling and disposal services are managed by Mercia Waste Management (Mercia).

A contract was signed with Mercia in 1998 to run the council's waste management services contract for 25 years. The contract includes the provision, management and operation of various facilities including:

  • Household recycling centres
  • Landfill sites
  • Material recycling facilities
  • Transfer stations
  • Energy from the waste facility currently under construction in Hartlebury, Worcestershire

Planning permission for the Energy from Waste plant at Hartlebury Trading Estate in Worcestershire was given in July 2012 and construction began in May 2014. It was formally opened in May 2017.
