Household waste collected from black bins in Herefordshire is taken to EnviRecover, a state of the art energy from waste facility, where it is used as a fuel to generate electricity.

The facility started taking waste from households in both Herefordshire and Worcestershire in October 2016. This means we don't have to rely on unsustainable landfill to dispose of non-recyclables. It provides the county with a reliable, safe and cost-effective means of dealing with our waste.

EnviRecover can accept up to 230,000 tonnes of waste per year. The waste is burnt at over 800ºC using the heat to produce steam which drives a turbine that generates over 135,000 MWh pa of electricity. The electricity is supplied to the National Grid and is enough to power more than 38,500 homes, which is all of the homes in Hereford city and more.

The facility is operated by our contractor, Severn Waste Services, who provide a joint waste treatment and recycling service to both Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council.
