Christmas can be a difficult time for those affected by homelessness.

Not only can this time of year bring feelings of loneliness and social isolation, but the bitter winter weather poses a serious risk to health and wellbeing.

Herefordshire Council is encouraging people affected by homelessness to be aware and make use of the support that is available.

St Peter’s Winter Shelter offers overnight accommodation for homeless people in Hereford from late November until mid-March. No referral is necessary, visitors can enquire at the shelter for accommodation that night.

The shelter can accommodate up to 19 people - 3 female and 16 male spaces are available - and two ‘wardens’ are on duty all night to provide support.

The shelter is open from 9pm until 7.45am daily and provides toilet, washing, shower and laundry facilities, as well as hot drinks (tea, coffee, soup).

The main purpose of the shelter is to provide accommodation for those who would otherwise be sleeping rough during winter, but staff and volunteers also aim to help support visitors in the longer term. The shelter works with Herefordshire Council’s Housing Solutions Team and other partners to assess each individual’s situation and provide appropriate advice, guidance and support that is tailored to a person’s circumstances.

Outside of St Peter’s, faith-based organisations provide hot food to rough sleepers and other vulnerable groups each day in Hereford city, including Christmas Day and New Year ’s Day (see details below).

Herefordshire Council’s Rough Sleeper Outreach service also operates from 7.30am – 5pm each day. Any individual can call into Blueschool House between 9am – 5pm, or call the (24/7) Out of Hours Service on 01432 261600.
