In launching this year’s competition, Councillor Brian Wilcox, Chairman of Herefordshire Council, said: “Now in its fourth year, the Herefordshire Community Champions Awards continues to show appreciation for the outstanding contribution made by individuals and groups across the county. The awards recognise the outstanding community contributions of so many brilliant people, so make sure you nominate those who have made a difference to your community! I am grateful to our sponsors Avara Foods, together with the Mayors of Hereford City and the market towns, for supporting the awards.”

Julie Cartmell was named 2018 ‘Caring Champion’ in recognition of 25 years volunteering for Herefordshire Samaritans. Julie said: “Many people who reach out to Samaritans may start with seemingly trivial issues, and through sensitive handling, we are able to uncover the real issues behind the contact. Receiving the ‘Caring Champion’ award in recognition of 25 years’ service was completely unexpected, but I feel really proud of my contribution to Samaritans and the opportunity to be there for people who may not have anyone else to turn to.”

Speaking about the awards, Chris Hall, Chief Commercial Officer, said: “Avara Foods relies on great people to make a difference in our business every day, which is why we continue to support the inspirational Herefordshire Community Champions Awards. It is a great platform to showcase the effort and contribution of people around the county who give back to their community.”
