Herefordshire Museums & Galleries will host the next event in its Public Assembly series on Saturday, 7 June.
Themed around ‘contentious narratives’, the Assembly invites local people to discuss how museums should respond to fake news, misinformation and contested histories.
The event will be held at the History Store in Hereford on Saturday 7 June from 1–2.30pm. It is free and open to all and no booking is required. Topics up for discussion include:
- Whose history is it anyway?
The Herefordshire Hoard has reignited pride in our Anglo-Saxon and Viking past, but who gets to claim that heritage today? With extremist groups claiming ancient symbols, we’ll explore the line between celebrating history and fuelling modern nationalism.
- Ley lines and loaded claims
Are ancient alignments evidence of lost knowledge or just wishful thinking? From Alfred Watkins to internet conspiracy, we’ll unpick the enduring appeal of ley lines and ask: what happens when folklore starts posing as fact?
- The climate debate: open minds or misinformation?
In a county shaped by land, weather and water, environmental narratives hit close to home. But how should museums handle climate denial, scepticism, or nostalgia for a ‘better’ past?
The discussion will be moderated by members of the museum team, but the emphasis is on hearing from you. We’re keen to gather a wide range of views and experiences. The session is open to everyone aged 16 and over.
Damian Etheraads, Museum and Art Gallery Lead at Herefordshire Council, said:
We’re looking forward to having an honest, challenging conversation with Herefordshire residents. How do we navigate the rise of populist narratives while standing up for truth? How can we present complex or controversial subjects with integrity, resisting harmful ideologies without becoming dogmatic?
These Public Assemblies are about listening as much as sharing. They help us shape the new museum based on what matters to our communities. I can’t wait to hear what people have to say on this vital topic.
Forthcoming events
The final Public Assembly of the current series, ‘Restoration or Ruin’, will take place on Tuesday 8 July at Ledbury Library from 4.30-5.45pm. This discussion will consider whether we should prioritise preserving original materials or adapt objects for contemporary display, balancing historical integrity with audience engagement.
