Pre-school children scoop top prizes in competition

Children from a Herefordshire pre-school and nursery are both enjoying a taste of success after scooping top prizes in a healthy eating competition.

Two children from Staunton on Wye School and Lake View Nursery have been named winners of the county’s Early Years Healthy Lunchbox competition.

The competition – run by Herefordshire Council in conjunction with the Time to Shine campaign – asked children to design a healthy lunch for their lunch boxes.

Nurseries and pre-schools from across the county took part in the competition which was run earlier this summer.

The two winners, George from Staunton on Wye primary school and Eloise from Lake View childcare nursery have been presented with certificates and their prizes after final judging took place.

Prizes for the competition were donated by the Herefordshire Food Alliance, a network of individuals and organisations from across the county involved in local, community and sustainable food.

Councillor Carole Gandy, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing, said: “Congratulations to the two winners. It’s never too early to learn about healthy eating and the positive impact it can have on our health, and we were delighted with the thought the children put into their entries.”

Cllr Ivan Powell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, added: “It was wonderful to see the creativity and enthusiasm that the children put into their work and the way they embraced the healthy eating message so whole-heartedly. Well done to everyone involved and thanks to the Herefordshire Food Alliance for donating the prizes.”

The Time to Shine campaign is an ongoing Herefordshire Council programme to support under-fives with oral health in the under 5s.
