The new building, which opened today (Monday 7 September), provides a modern learning environment for children in the Golden Valley and increases the school’s capacity from 105 to 140 pupils.

The new school building was handed over to Herefordshire Council and the school on Friday, 4 September  ahead of pupils arriving for the start of the new school year.

The project is being delivered by Tilbury Douglas Construction, in partnership with Herefordshire Council’s Capital Projects team. 

Work will now move into its second phase, including the demolition of the existing school building and the completion of the remaining external works. This phase is expected to be completed by the end of January 2027.

A new pedestrian crossing has also been constructed and is now open, providing a safer route for pupils and families accessing the new school.

Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet member for Children and Young People, Councillor Ivan Powell, said:

“It is fantastic to see Peterchurch pupils starting the new school year in this wonderful new building.

“This is a major investment in the future of children and families in the Golden Valley, providing a modern, purpose-built school that can meet the needs of the community for years to come

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in delivering the project and, most importantly, the pupils, staff and families for their patience while this important work has taken place.”

Peterchurch Primary School Headteacher, Nia Powell, said:

“It’s fantastic to be working in partnership with Herefordshire Council to ensure our children have the best possible educational experience in a modern, purpose-built environment.

“The new school provides a wonderful setting for our pupils to learn, grow and thrive, and we’re delighted to welcome our children into their new school as we begin this exciting new chapter.”

The school is also inviting current parents, parents of prospective new pupils and the wider community to its Welcome Afternoon on Thursday 10 September, from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Parents will have the opportunity to look around the new school, meet staff and see the new facilities for themselves.

The £10 million investment forms part of Herefordshire Council’s commitment to providing high-quality school facilities for children and young people across the county.
