Older adults share their secrets to staying active and healthy

Over half of older adults (over 55 years) across Herefordshire and Worcestershire are among the most physically active.

According to the latest Sport England Active Lives Survey, over half (58.1%) of over-55s are achieving 150 plus minutes of physical activity per week.

Positive Ageing Week 2026, which starts today (25 September) and runs until 2 October, celebrates the inspiring stories older people have shared about their active and healthy lives.

Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Age UK North Worcestershire, Age UK Wyvern, Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council are joining forces to showcase inspirational stories from across both counties.

We've been asking older adults across the two counties what they would tell their younger selves about the benefits of an active lifestyle. Throughout the week, we'll be sharing their stories across our social media channels.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Stephen Brewster, CEO of Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, said:

"Positive Ageing Week celebrates the contribution older people make to our communities every day. The Active Lives Survey shows many older adults across Herefordshire and Worcestershire are leading active, healthy and connected lives.
"This year's theme for Positive Ageing Week, Connecting Generations, recognises the value of sharing experiences and learning from one another. We encourage everyone to get involved, whether that's getting more active or sharing an inspiring story."

Caroline Savage, Social Inclusion Service Manager at Age UK Wyvern, said:

“Positive Aging Week is a great opportunity to celebrate the value older people bring to our communities and the importance of connecting generations.
"At Age UK Wyvern, our activities and groups create opportunities for people to share experiences, skills and stories, building connections that benefit everyone.”

Zoe Clifford, Director of Public Health at Herefordshire Council added:

“Connecting Generations is a powerful theme because it highlights how much we all gain when people of different ages spend time together. We hope the campaign inspires people to challenge stereotypes around ageing and discover new ways to stay active, healthy and connected”.
