New library cards launched to help Herefordshire children start their reading journey

Parents and carers of nursery and reception-aged children across Herefordshire are being encouraged to sign up their child for their very own library card as part of a new initiative from Herefordshire Libraries.

The project forms part of the National Year of Reading and supports the government’s Best Start in Life programme, helping children to develop a love of reading from an early age.

The scheme aims to inspire children and families to make the most of the free books, activities and digital resources available through their local library.

Working in partnership with nurseries, childminders and primary schools across the county, Herefordshire Libraries hopes to ensure every child can begin their reading journey with a first library card of their own.

The new nursery-age library cards feature charming woodland animal illustrations, specially hand drawn by local artist Iain Welch. The colourful designs have been created to capture young children's imagination and make receiving their first library card an exciting milestone as they begin their reading journey.

Library membership is free and gives children access to thousands of books, as well as eBooks, audiobooks and a range of family-friendly activities, including the annual Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s challenge was a huge success with more than 1,000 children taking part, almost 20,000 children’s books borrowed and a packed programme of 169 free events to help children maintain their reading confidence over the school holidays.

Reading from an early age helps children develop language and communication skills, build confidence and spark their imagination. Regular library visits can also help families enjoy quality time together and discover new books and learning activities.

Research shows that children who read for pleasure are more likely to achieve positive educational outcomes, develop stronger communication skills and enjoy improved wellbeing.

Cllr Ivan Powell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:

“We want every child in Herefordshire to have the best possible start in life, and reading plays an important role in that. Having their own library card helps children feel a sense of excitement and ownership about books and stories.
"The new nursery age library cards, featuring beautifully designed woodland animals hand drawn by Herefordshire artist Iain Welch, have been designed to make joining the library even more special for young children. We hope they will inspire a lifelong love of stories, reading and learning and encourage more parents and carers to visit their local library and discover the wide range of free resources and activities available for everyone.”

Herefordshire Libraries membership is free for children and adults. To find out more information about joining, speak to staff at your local library or visit the Herefordshire Libraries webpage.
