National Adoption Week highlights the importance of everyday moments for children waiting for adoption
Herefordshire Council alongside local authority partners and Adoption Central England (ACE), is proud to support National Adoption Week 2026, running from Monday 19 to Sunday 25 October and raise awareness of the life-changing impact of adoption.
This year's message from the national You Can Adopt campaign is ‘Every Day is Everything’, which highlights the everyday moments that help children feel safe, loved and part of a family.
This campaign also coincides with a significant milestone, as 2026 marks 100 years since adoption became a legal formal process in England and Wales. While much has changed over the last century, the importance of providing children with stable, safe, permanent homes remains as important today as ever.
The You Can Adopt campaign is a national initiative that encourages more people to consider adoption and challenges common misconceptions about who can adopt. Focusing on the ordinary moments of family life that can mean so much to a child who has experienced uncertainty or instability. From breakfast before school and bedtime stories to celebrating achievements and offering comfort during difficult times, it highlights that adoption is about adoptive parents being there consistently for a child every day.
Last month, ACE highlighted the growing need for adopters across the region, where more than 90 children are currently waiting for permanent homes. The number of people coming forward to explore adoption has fallen in recent years, both regionally and nationally, meaning more children are waiting longer to find the stability and security of a permanent family.
Adopters can be single, married, living with a partner, with or without children of their own and from all backgrounds. What matters most is the ability to provide a safe, nurturing home where a child can thrive. ACE is particularly keen to hear from people willing to consider adopting sibling groups, older children or children with health needs or uncertainty as these are the children who may wait longest.
Cllr Ivan Powell, Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:
“Alongside our partners in ACE, Herefordshire is proud to support National Adoption Week and the vital work of our collective services. The campaign is a chance to reflect on the incredible difference adoption can make.
“Adoption has the power to transform lives, and every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a loving and permanent family where they feel safe, valued and supported. I encourage anyone considering adoption to visit the ACE website to learn more about the process, the support available, and how they can help shape a child’s future.”
ACE is committed to supporting individuals and families throughout every stage of their adoption journey providing ongoing support to help adopters build strong and lasting family relationships.
The ACE website features real-life stories from adopted people, birth parents and adoptive families, offering insight into the different experience’s adoption can bring and the positive difference it can make.
