Herefordshire Council prepares for Storm Austen as heavy rain and strong winds forecast
Herefordshire Council is urging residents and road users to take extra care as Storm Austen brings the chance of heavy rain, strong winds and disruption across the county over the next few days.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings affecting Herefordshire, with persistent heavy rain and strong winds expected as the storm moves across the country.
Heavy rainfall could lead to surface water flooding, difficult driving conditions and possible road closures, while strong winds bring an increased risk of fallen trees, branches and other debris.
Although the strongest winds are expected further southwest, gusts of around 45mph are forecast in Hereford on Friday, with conditions potentially more exposed in some rural areas.
Herefordshire Council is working with its highways teams to monitor the developing situation and prepare for any disruption.
Particular attention is being given to the potential impact on the county’s extensive rural road network, where fallen trees, flooding and debris can make roads hazardous.
Residents are being encouraged to take some simple precautions ahead of the storm, including securing loose items in gardens, checking travel arrangements and keeping up to date with weather and flood warnings.
Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Local Engagement and Community Resilience, Councillor Dan Hurcomb, said:
“Storm Austen has the potential to bring some challenging conditions to Herefordshire, particularly on our roads, and we want everyone to stay safe.
“Our teams are preparing for the possibility of disruption, but we’d also ask residents to play their part by keeping an eye on the weather, taking care when travelling and avoiding unnecessary risks.
“Please be particularly careful around trees during high winds and never attempt to drive through floodwater. A little preparation and common sense can make a real difference.”
Staying safe during Storm Austen
Herefordshire Council is reminding residents to:
- Take care on the roads: Allow extra time for journeys, drive according to conditions and be prepared for unexpected hazards, particularly on rural routes.
- Watch out for falling trees and branches: Avoid walking through woodland or beneath large trees during strong winds. Keep away from fallen or damaged trees, which may remain unstable.
- Never drive through floodwater: Floodwater can be deeper and faster-flowing than it appears. Follow road closure signs and use alternative routes.
- Do not move or go through ‘road closed’ signs.
- Secure loose objects: Check garden furniture, bins, trampolines and other items that could be blown around in strong winds.
- Check weather and flood warnings: Keep up to date with the latest Met Office forecasts and Environment Agency flood information.
- Look out for others: Check on neighbours, particularly older or vulnerable residents, where it is safe to do so.
Residents are also reminded not to attempt to remove fallen trees themselves, particularly where electricity cables may be involved.
The council will provide updates on significant road closures and disruption to services through its website and social media channels as necessary.
Residents can find the latest weather warnings through the Met Office, check flood warnings through the Government’s online flood check service and report highways problems through Herefordshire Council’s Highways line on 01432 261800.
