Great Western Way reopens with major improvements for cyclists and pedestrians
A key active travel route in Hereford has reopened following a series of improvements to make it safer, more accessible and easier to use.
The Great Western Way route, between Barton Yard and Widemarsh Common, has been upgraded as part of Herefordshire Council’s wider programme to improve walking and cycling infrastructure across the county.
The scheme includes improved access points, the removal of pinch points, new lighting, vegetation clearance, and a new cycleway surface — all designed to create a more welcoming and user-friendly route for both cyclists and pedestrians.
The improvements aim to better connect communities north of the river with the city centre, providing easier access to jobs, services and leisure opportunities.
Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor Philip Price, said:
“We’re pleased to see Great Western Way reopen following these important improvements. This is a well-used route, and the upgrades make it safer, more accessible and more attractive for people choosing to walk, wheel or cycle.
“By improving connections between communities and the city centre, we’re supporting more sustainable travel choices, helping to reduce congestion and making it easier for people to access employment, services and leisure opportunities.
“Schemes like this are also about fairness — ensuring more people have safe and reliable ways to get around, regardless of how they travel.”
The project forms part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing active travel routes, encouraging healthier lifestyles and increasing travel options for residents.
By making routes like Great Western Way more accessible and appealing, the Council hopes to increase the number of people choosing to travel across the city by foot or by bike.
