The Great Herefordshire Spring Clean launches this week
Communities across the county are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and help tidy up their neighbourhoods as part of The Great Herefordshire Spring Clean, taking place from 13 to 29 March.
The campaign is Herefordshire’s local contribution to the national Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean, bringing together residents, schools, community groups and businesses to help care for the environment and keep the county looking its best.
Herefordshire Council is supporting the campaign and encouraging people to get involved by joining existing litter groups or organising local clean-ups in their area.
A Council-backed litter pick will take place at Thorn Depot in Hereford on Tuesday 17 March, bringing volunteers and partners together to support the initiative.
Residents who would like to organise their own litter pick can borrow equipment from the council. Litter picking packs are available to loan and include litter pickers, gloves, high-visibility vests and the distinctive purple bags used across the county.
Herefordshire already has a number of community litter groups organising regular clean-ups, including groups in Hereford, Leominster, Ross-on-Wye, Whitbourne, Goodrich and Colwall, and new volunteers are always welcome.
The council’s website also includes details of upcoming litter pick events, advice on organising a clean-up and information on how to join a local litter group.
Cabinet Member for Roads and Regulatory Services, Cllr Barry Durkin, said:
“The Great Herefordshire Spring Clean is a fantastic opportunity for communities to come together and take pride in the places where we live and work.
“The Council spends more than £1 million a year on street cleansing, including picking up litter. The work of volunteers and community groups across the county makes a huge difference, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who gives their time to help keep Herefordshire clean and welcoming.”
One of the local groups making a difference is the Hereford Community Clean Up Group, which organises regular litter picks across the city.
Founder Emma Jones said getting involved is about much more than helping to keep Herefordshire tidy.
Emma said:
“Litter picks might seem like a small thing, but they can make a big difference. When people come together to look after the places they live, it builds pride and a real sense of community. For us, it’s never just about picking up rubbish — it’s about bringing people together, making everyone feel welcome, and showing that we all have a part to play in keeping Herefordshire a place we’re proud to call home.”
Across Herefordshire there are around 1,400 public litter bins, which are emptied regularly. However, litter in public places and along roadsides continues to have an impact on the environment and the reputation of the county.
More information about organising a litter pick, borrowing equipment or joining a local litter group is available on the council website.
