Community groups invited to apply for grants to boost nature and biodiversity
Community groups, charities, schools and parish councils across Herefordshire are being encouraged to apply for funding to help improve and protect the county’s natural environment.
The Nature and Biodiversity Community Grant Scheme has reopened for 2026, offering grants of between £500 and £10,000 for projects that improve habitats, support wildlife and help people connect with nature. In exceptional circumstances, grants of up to £35,000 may be available for projects that make a significant difference to the local environment.
Delivered by FCC Environment, Herefordshire’s Recyclables and Waste Collection provider, in partnership with Herefordshire Council, the scheme supports practical, community-led projects that help nature recover across the county.
Funding is available for projects such as tree and hedge planting, the creation of ponds and wetlands, wildflower meadows, wildlife corridors, community nature areas, and the installation of bird, bat and insect boxes. Funding can also be used to buy equipment needed to look after habitats and green spaces in the long term.
The scheme focuses on supporting local wildlife and important habitats, including wetlands, orchards, woodlands and meadows. It also encourages the use of native and climate-resilient planting and sustainable materials wherever possible.
Brian Ashby, Head of Municipal Collections and Streetscene at FCC Environment, said:
“We’re really pleased to be bringing this grant scheme to Herefordshire following the success we’ve seen with similar schemes in other areas.
“We’re keen to support the excellent work of community groups whose projects on a very local level could make a very tangible and positive impact on the wider environment and wildlife. We’re excited to see what projects are successful for the funding.”
Herefordshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for the Environment and Culture, Cllr Elissa Swinglehurst, said:
“This grant scheme is a fantastic opportunity for communities across Herefordshire to take practical action to protect and enhance our natural environment. From creating new habitats for wildlife to improving access to green spaces, these projects will make a real and lasting difference to biodiversity across the county.
“We are encouraging eligible community groups, parish councils, schools and charities to come forward with their ideas and help us continue building a greener, more resilient Herefordshire for future generations.”
Applications are open to not-for-profit organisations with a formal constitution based in Herefordshire, including registered charities, community interest companies and parish councils. Informal community groups may also apply where they are working with an eligible organisation.
Applications are now open and must be submitted by midnight on 31 August 2026. Funding decisions will be made by 31 October 2026, with successful projects to be completed by 31 March 2027.
Applicants are asked to submit a completed application form and project costings, including supporting evidence such as quotations for any items costing more than £250.
