Armed Forces Week Flag Raising Events Across Herefordshire

Armed Forces flag-raising ceremonies were held across Herefordshire yesterday to mark the beginning of Armed Forces Week and traditionally mark the start of a week-long programme of events leading up to Armed Forces Day.

Ceremony’s took place in Hereford city centre, the county’s five market towns, and at the County Hospital. In Hereford High Town the event marked the start of Armed Forces week attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, the Chairman of Herefordshire Council and military representatives, bringing together representatives from across the county to recognise and celebrate the contribution of the Armed Forces community. Along with performances from three local schools - Riverside Primary School, Holmer C of E Academy and Sutton Primary School which were warmly received by those gathered.

His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire Mr Edward Harley said:

“I am delighted that Flag Raising, the start of Armed Forces Week, has taken place in High Town, Hereford and in the county’s market towns this year. World events continue to serve as a reminder of the importance of our Armed Forces. The culmination of Armed Forces Week will be Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June in Kington, where the outdoor official event will commence at 11am at Lady Hawkins’ School. I hope as many people as possible will attend this family occasion to show support for all those involved with the Armed Forces.”

Cllr Stoddart, Chair of the Herefordshire Armed Forces Covenant, said:

“Armed Forces Day provides an important opportunity for us, as a county, to recognise and show our appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community.
The flag-raising ceremony is a proud and symbolic start to Armed Forces week, demonstrating Herefordshire’s continued commitment to serving personnel, veterans, and their families. We are honoured to stand alongside members of the Armed Forces family and reaffirm our support for them today and throughout the year.
Herefordshire has a strong and enduring connection with the Armed Forces, and we remain committed to ensuring that those who serve, and have served, are supported and valued within our communities.”

Chairman of Herefordshire Council Cllr Roger Phillips OBE, JP said:

“Herefordshire has a large Armed Forces community of active, reservists, cadets and veterans who make a considerable contribution not only to the protection of our nation but also to our local community and economy. Armed Forces week is an opportunity for us all to knowledge their contribution and also of their families who often deal with particularly unique challenges.”

Ali Bolton, Associate Director of Improvement for Wye Valley NHS Trust, said:

"Today on Armed Forces Day, we honour and recognise those who serve or have served for our country with the raising of the flag at Hereford County Hospital. We’re proud to celebrate the commitment of former Armed Forces personnel who work and volunteer in our hospitals and community services across Herefordshire, bringing their invaluable skills and experience to help provide the best possible care for patients. Thank you for your dedication.”

Armed Forces Week (22 to 27 June) provides an opportunity to recognise and thank the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, including currently serving personnel, veterans, cadets, and their families.
