Free Nordic walking courses return to Herefordshire this autumn

Lace up your boots and grab your walking poles, because Herefordshire Council’s free Nordic walking courses are back this autumn, with three beginner courses now open for booking.

Expertly led by Nordic Walking UK instructor Alison Gaster, these course are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Sign on and you’ll learn the basics of Nordic walking using the specially designed poles. The sessions give you a full-body workout that’s easy on the joints.

Based on the success of previous courses, Herefordshire Council has organised three free five-week beginner courses, funded by the Department for Transport.

Two courses will take place at Belmont Country Park, starting on Friday 11 September, with sessions at 10am and 11.30am. A third course will begin at Aylestone Park on Thursday 24 September at 2pm. All sessions last one hour, with free parking available at both locations.

Nordic walking uses up to 90 per cent of the body’s major muscles, compared with around 45 per cent during regular walking, and can burn up to 46 per cent more energy.

Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor Philip Price, said:

“Walking has a wide range of benefits for both physical and mental health, and these courses are designed to help people build more activity into their daily lives. They can also give people the confidence to swap shorter car journeys for walking where possible.”

Places are free but must be booked in advance.
