Planning permission granted for Aylestone School £13.1m expansion

Planning permission has officially been granted for the expansion of Aylestone School, Hereford.

The approved scheme will see £13.1m investment in the school’s facilities to accommodate 300 additional pupils (60 pupils per year group), with the first intake into year 7 from September 2027.

The permanent expansion was approved by Cabinet in February 2023 and aims to meet the growing demand for school places in the north of Hereford City.

The approved design includes the provision of a new sports hall, a two-storey teaching block comprising of six classrooms, a music room and practice spaces and changing accommodation, along with internal remodelling of existing facilities and external works. The plans also include provision for a widened access route and a drop-off/pick-up area for vehicles, which can be implemented if required, depending on the outcome of the Safer Routes to School scheme.

The project is part of Herefordshire Council’s wider investment in education across the county, aimed at ensuring every child has access to modern, inclusive and sustainable education facilities.

Further updates will be shared with parents, carers, and the wider community as the construction project progresses.

Councillor Ivan Powell, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “We’re delighted that planning permission has been granted, which means the expansion of Aylestone School can now go ahead. This project is part of the council’s commitment to delivering high-quality inclusive education facilities that meets the needs of our children and young people.”

Councillor Harry Bramer, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Assets, added: “This is a major step forward for education in Hereford. The expansion of Aylestone School will provide a safe, inspiring environment for more students to thrive.”

Simon Robertson, Headteacher of Aylestone School, said: “Securing planning permission is an important milestone for our school community. The new facilities will greatly enrich the learning environment for both current and future students. These spaces will not only support academic growth but also offer a wider range of opportunities for all who attend the school. We look forward to moving to the construction stage of the project.”
