Here come the bins
New garden waste collection services rolls out across Herefordshire
Herefordshire’s new garden waste collection service got underway in style this week as the Council’s team took delivery of thousands of new brown bins.
Deliveries to homes across the county is now underway, ahead of the first collection season starting in March 2026. Under the scheme, the Council will collect garden waste from brown bins every fortnight, turning it into compost to support future green growth.
For residents who have signed up, it’s a double win – helping the environment while saving trips to the recycling centre. Subscriptions, which opened last October, cost just £60 for the year – that’s £2.40 per collection.
Residents can place grass cuttings, hedge clippings, leaves, twigs, small branches, dead flowers, weeds, and windfall fruit in their bins. The service provides a 240-litre brown bin or, if the property isn’t suitable for a bin, four 60-litre reusable sacks. The scheme is flexible: residents can share with neighbours, add extra bins, and even take their subscription with them if they move.
Herefordshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Elissa Swinglehurst, was at the Grafton Lane Depot this week to welcome the first consignment of bins.
Cllr Swinglehurst said:
“As a Council we are committed to protecting the environment and providing services that make life easier and represent great value for money. The new garden waste service does just this, and many residents have already signed up. With Spring on the way, there’s never been a better time to get ready for the growing season – don’t miss out, sign up, get your brown bin, and go green.”
Teams are currently delivering bins to all customers who subscribed to the service before the 18 January 2026 and will move on to a second phase of deliveries to customers who have signed up after this date. The second phase will include the delivery of reusable sacks to all that have chosen this option.
Residents are encouraged to sign up to the service as soon as possible in order to receive their bins in plenty of time prior to the collection service starting.
