Local people urged to shape the continued success of Hereford and Leominster May Fairs

Residents, businesses and visitors are being invited to help shape the continued success of the Hereford and Leominster May Fairs.

Herefordshire Council has launched a public consultation to gather views on the traditional fairs and how they can operate even more effectively for the thousands of visitors, businesses and local residents in the future, to inform delivery plans, including contractual arrangements, from 2028.

Hereford May Fair is more than 900 years old, and it and the Leominster May Fair attract thousands of visitors each year. Between them, the events provide benefits for the local economy with visitors using local shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes and other food outlets.

The consultation covers areas such as economic impact and asks people for their views on further developing and improving these popular, traditional events in the future, It covers topics such as key ancillary activities, impact of the fair on other activities and spending, ideas to further boost visitor experience, and even whether the council should consider any alternative locations in the future.

The May Fairs are among the county’s most well-known events, with rides, stalls, food and entertainment. Hereford’s May Fair has particularly deep roots in the county’s history, with its charter dating back to 1121, making it the oldest surviving charter fair in Britain.

The fairs continue to be a popular and important part of the county’s heritage and the local economy. The Council is therefore seeking feedback from residents, businesses and stakeholders about how they can continue to thrive in the future, including all options to improve the experience for everyone over the three days each May.

The consultation runs from 23 April to 23 May 2026 and is open to anyone who would like to share their views. It will help inform how the fairs are organised from 2028 onwards, when new contracts will be introduced for future May Fairs.

Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Roads and Regulatory Services, Cllr Barry Durkin said:

“Hereford and Leominster’s May Fairs are the people’s fairs – so local people need to be central to shaping their future. Not only are they important part of our county’s history, but they continue to be a significant date in people’s calendars - after 900 years! They bring thousands of people together each year, contributing hugely to the visitor economy - which is worth more than £700 million annually to our county.
“It’s only right that we look to continue improving the experience for people enjoying all the fun of the far, local businesses and residents as a whole. That’s why we want your views to inform future plans. We’re committed to continue providing the very best three-days possible for residents, businesses and visitors, so understanding what people value about the fairs and what could be improved, is valuable as we plan for the future.
“This consultation is an opportunity for everyone to share their views and help shape how these traditional events continue successfully and safely for many years ahead.”

The consultation is available online on Herefordshire Council's Consultation Portal.

The consultation closes at midnight on 23 May 2026.

Feedback will be reviewed and used to help inform future decisions about how the fairs operate from 2028.

  • This year’s Leominster May Fair will run from April 30 to May 2.
  • ·    The Hereford May Fair will run from May 5 to May 7.
