On Your Bike for Cycle to School Week!

Herefordshire celebrates cycling with free Bikeability training for over 1,400 pupils.

Cycle to School Week is rolling into Herefordshire, encouraging pupils and families to embrace cycling as a fun, healthy, and environmentally friendly way to travel to and from school.

In partnership with Herefordshire Council, Bike Right instructors delivered free Bikeability Level 1 and 2 training to more than 1,400 Year 6 pupils across the county in 2024/25. The programme starts in school playgrounds, where children learn essential control and safety skills. Pupils then take to quiet local streets in small groups, gaining confidence in real-world cycling scenarios - responding to hazards, maintaining safe road positions, and understanding road signs and signals.

According to the Bikeability Trust, 96% of parents are more likely to encourage their children to cycle after completing Level 2 training.

Councillor Philip Price, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, said:

“During Cycle to School Week we encourage parents to leave the car at home and enjoy the benefits of cycling to school, including saving money, boosting health, and helping the environment.”

“For anyone keen to improve their cycling skills, Bike Right offers free cycling lessons for children and adults during the holidays and the information can be found on our website by searching for cycling.”
