This is part of the Improving Travel in Hereford programme, a £19.99 million investment from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund to deliver a package of transport and travel improvements in and around Hereford city. 

The Holme Lacy Road scheme will bring significant benefits to residents, businesses, and commuters by improving safety, accessibility, and traffic flow along a key route into the city. It will enhance travel choices to Skylon Park, the Hereford Enterprise Zone and the wider Rotherwas area, a key location for employment and growth in the city. 

Advance warning signs will be installed from today (Monday, October 13) and letters are being sent to residents and businesses in the area to inform them of the upcoming works.

The scheme will upgrade the stretch of Holme Lacy Road from Oak Crescent to the Thorn Business Park junction, with a comprehensive set of improvements including:

• Resurfaced carriageways for a smoother and more reliable drive
• Safer pedestrian crossings to support walking and local access
• Raised tables and high friction surfacing to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance safety
• Widened shared spaces for cyclists and walkers, encouraging travel choice
• A new signalised junction at Holme Lacy Road/Chestnut Drive/Hoarwithy Road to improve traffic management
• A shuttle working system at the Holme Lacy railway bridge to ease congestion and create space for a wider footway

Councillor Philip Price, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure at Herefordshire Council, said:

There will be improved road surfaces and greater road safety through the installation of a high friction surface to moderate vehicle speeds, as well as important work to the drainage around Holme Lacy Bridge.

The benefits will also be felt by those who choose to walk or cycle, with greater shared surfaces and improved crossing points.

This scheme is a vital step in our long-term vision to create a more connected and prosperous Herefordshire.
