The upgrade will include resurfacing, improved lighting, and enhanced crossing points, all designed to make the route safer and more user-friendly for pedestrians, cyclists, and those with mobility challenges. 

The overall in investment of £675,000, which will deliver significant improvements to the route, is made up of just over £300,000 from Stronger Towns Funding and just under £375,000 from Levelling Up funds.

Councillor Philip Price, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Transport, welcomed the decision:

“This investment in Great Western Way is a clear demonstration of our commitment to supporting travel choices and making Hereford a safer, more accessible place for everyone. 

"Whether you're walking to school, cycling to work, or enjoying a weekend stroll, these upgrades will make a real difference to daily life for thousands of residents.”

The improvements form part of the council’s wider strategy to promote travel choices, reduce congestion, and support environmental sustainability across the county.

The works are scheduled to begin later this autumn and are expected to be completed in spring 2026.
