£1 Million to Revitalise Play Areas Across the County

We're making a major investment of £1 million to improve play areas across the county, aiming to enhance community wellbeing and provide inclusive, safe spaces for children of all abilities.

Our investment will support the refurbishment of play equipment, improve accessibility, and ensure children’s safety across the county.

The funding will be drawn from the Council’s capital programme and will be allocated over the financial years 2025/26 and 2026/27.

The Council will work closely with City, Town and Parish Councils to identify play areas for improvement from the investment fund. The council currently manage 64 play areas across the county that benefit approximately 33,800 children under 18 in Herefordshire, local councils will be invited to take ownership of local play areas through an asset transfer process, enabling them to manage the capital spend and oversee long-term maintenance.

Cllr Dan Hurcomb, Cabinet member for Local Engagement and Community said:

The £1 million pounds funding set aside by the Council will enable many of these parks to be improved for local families to enjoy for many years to come.
We’re committed to working with the City, Town and Parish Councils to provide spaces where children and families can enjoy the outdoors. This investment is about more than equipment, it’s about creating inclusive environments that support wellbeing and communities.

Key features of the initiative include:

  • Inclusive design: The equipment will be selected to support children with disabilities and special educational needs wherever possible.
  • Environmental responsibility: Contractors will be required to minimise waste and carbon emissions.
  • Community impact: The project aligns with the Council Plan 2024 - 2028, by giving all children the best start to their life and by enhancing our environment and ensure that Herefordshire is a great place to live.
