Dangers of ignoring road closure signs

Hidden Dangers

  • Floodwaters hide hazards like lifted manhole covers, debris and damaged road surfaces and verges. Even after the water recedes, structural damage to roads, banks and verges may still be present.
  • Driving hazards such as mud and debris may need to be cleared by our teams before it is safe.

Danger to Others

  • Moving or ignoring flood signs puts yourself and others at risk. It’s not only dangerous, but it's also an offence.
  • Do not drive into floodwater.

The Facts

  • 15cm of fast-moving water can knock you off your feet.
  • 30cm of water can move your car.
  • 60cm of standing water will float your vehicle.

Don’t risk it

Even a small amount of water can cause serious damage to your car or, worse, lead to a life-threatening situation.

Removing signs or driving through flooded areas means our teams and emergency resources are tied up and can’t respond to other urgent situations.
