New volunteering opportunities at Herefordshire Museums & Galleries

More exciting opportunities have been announced today for Herefordshire residents keen to get involved with their local heritage.


The opportunities are open to anyone who has some time to spare and a strong interest in history, culture and the arts. They are for a period of six months and focus on collections care, cataloguing and visitor engagement, as well as helping with events.

Current projects on offer are:

  • Animal, plant or rock: cataloguing natural science
  • Capturing collections information
  • Improving visitor experiences
  • Museum on the move event volunteer
  • Nightlife notebooks: digitising Enoch Sweetman's sketchbooks
  • Picture perfect photos: photos editing
  • Stone stories – archaeology
  • Unlocking secrets with archaeology accessioning
  • Unlocking secrets with social history cataloguing

Most roles are based at the History Store or the Old House Hereford, with the events role taking place across multiple locations. All volunteers will receive full training and support, with flexible hours available to suit different schedules.

Volunteering with Herefordshire Museums & Galleries is a rewarding way to get involved in your local community. Whether you’re looking to gain new skills, meet like-minded people, build your CV, or simply explore an interest in heritage, our volunteering programme offers real-world experience and a chance to make a meaningful contribution to preserving Herefordshire’s past.

The deadline for expressions of interest is Tuesday 27 May at 12pm by email to: herefordmuseums@herefordshire.gov.uk.

Damian Etheraads, Museum and Art Gallery Lead at Herefordshire Council, said:

We welcome people from all backgrounds to join our volunteer team; no previous experience is needed. If you're curious, willing to learn, and can spare a few hours a week, we'd love to hear from you. Full training and support are provided for all roles and flexible schedules are available to suit volunteers’ availability.
