Peterchurch Primary School to Retain Swimming Pool

The swimming pool at Peterchurch Primary School will be retained as part of the £10m new school site, following council approval.

The decision comes after the school presented a viable business case demonstrating that the pool can be renovated and operated sustainably. Essential upgrades, including roofing, rewiring, lighting and changing area refurbishment, will be funded through secured external contributions, including Section 106 funding and delivered by the school with no cost to the local authority.

Retaining the pool ensures local children can continue to access swimming and water safety lessons, which is a statutory requirement for Key Stage 2 education. The decision also avoids the disruption and expense of pupils and staff travelling several miles to alternative swimming pool facilities.

The pool has served the community for decades and remains a valued asset, offering educational, health and wellbeing benefits for pupils and families in the Golden Valley.

This decision supports the Herefordshire Council Plan 2024-2028 priorities to help residents live healthy lives and give all children the best start in life. It also strengthens community cohesion by preserving a long-standing facility that generations of students have enjoyed.

Cllr Harry Bramer, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Assets, said: "We’re pleased that Peterchurch Primary School has put forward a robust business case and the existing swimming pool with be part of the new school site.”

Cllr Philip Price, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure and Ward Member for Golden Valley North, added: “The decision to keep the pool is great news for the Golden Valley community and will ensure that pupils can continue to access to local swimming provision.”

Headteacher of Peterchurch Primary School, Mrs Nia Powell, said: “We are delighted with the news that the swimming pool will remain open. The pool is an important part of our site and has been used by generations of students and will continue to be used to teach essential lifelong swimming skills in the future.”
