Traffic flow and safety is set to be improved in Hereford thanks to £541,000 government funding to upgrade signals at the city’s busiest junctions.

Over the coming months the traffic signal systems will be upgraded at:

• Aylestone Hill through to Commercial Road junction
• Widemarsh Street, Commercial Road and St Owen’s Street junction
• Whitecross Road at the Eign Street A438 junction

The improvements will include replacing in-road vehicle detection with more modern and reliable above ground options, and the replacement and reconfiguration of controllers to make them more efficient.

These improvements will allow for interaction and coordination of signals along these major routes into Hereford including with the signals along the A49 which are controlled by National Highways.

Councillor Barry Durkin, cabinet member roads and regulatory services, said:

“This is further investment in our road network. Upgrading the traffic signals at busy junctions will ensure they can be better coordinated across the whole road network. This will help to improve traffic flow and safety, which will a much better experience for everyone travelling around our city.”
