Hearing, visual and medical needs

Support for hearing impairment

Many children with a hearing impairment attend their local childcare provision and are able to progress into mainstream primary and secondary school. Support and training for children in pre-school settings is available for the setting from the early years advisory team.

If your child has been referred to the hearing impairment team by the Children's Hearing Centre, they will provide specialist support to the childcare setting, and also for children and young people of compulsory school age. For information about diagnosis visit the children's hearing service page on the Wye Valley NHS Trust website. For information about the support available in schools and settings for hearing impairment visit the educational support for children with a hearing impairment page.

Support for visual impairment

Many children with a visual impairment attend their local childcare provision and are able to attend mainstream schools with appropriate support. Support and training is available for childcare settings from the early years advisory team. If your child has been referred to the visual impairment team by the hospital eye unit they will provide specialist support to the childcare setting. For information about diagnosis visit the Wye Valley NHS Trust's ophthalmology page. For information about the support available in schools and settings for visual impairment visit the educational support for children with a visual impairment page.

Children with medical needs

Most children with medical needs attend their local childcare provision. It may be that staff will need specific advice or training from health professionals in order to meet all the child's care needs. When considering childcare please ensure you give staff all the relevant information - they will need to put together a health care plan with you. Also allow plenty of settling-in time for staff to get to know your child and his or her needs and to access any relevant training.

For children of compulsory school age, H3 (Hub, Home, Hospital) Teaching Team provides education and support for children and young people who are unable to attend school for health reasons.
