About the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for learning, development and care of children from birth to five years. All Ofsted registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, pre-schools, nurseries, out of school care and school reception classes. The EYFS was updated in January 2024 and there is now a separate EYFS document specific to childminders.
The two new frameworks are:
- EYFS statutory framework for childminders
- EYFS statutory framework for group and school-based providers
The EYFS framework also includes: Early years qualification requirements and standards – GOV.UK
For more information about why the changes have been made and what you need to do, please see the website: Changes to the early years foundation stage (EYFS) framework: January 2024 – Help for early years providers – GOV.UK
Supporting material and non-statutory guidance is available on the following websites:
- Development matters: non-statutory curriculum guidance for the early years foundation stage
- Birth to five matters: Non-statutory guidance for the early years foundation stage
The Department for Education (DfE) have created free guidance and training for those who work in the early years. This is a great resource for developing practitioners' understanding of the EYFS and their responsibilities within this. A selection of videos support understanding and make this a crucial part of any practitioner's induction.
The Foundation Years website provides the latest news, policy and resources for early years professionals.
