Making a compulsory purchase order is a statutory procedure that gives the council the power to compulsorily acquire all of the land and property required for a scheme. However the powers can only be used if approved by the Secretary of State following the consideration of any objections received.

The council has the legal right to buy or take rights over your private property:

  • If it falls within a public redevelopment scheme, such as new roads, town centre developments and urban regeneration
  • To remove unfit housing
