Extra care housing
Extra care housing is designed with the needs of older people (aged 55+) in mind. Varying levels of care and support are available on site, but ultimately they are designed to allow independent living. The schemes usually provide accommodation, 24 hour care and support, leisure, social and shopping facilities.

There are plans to develop more of these schemes throughout the county, as they provide a good alternative to residential care and promote independence.
Sheltered housing
Sheltered housing is another option for older people who need an element of support to live independently. It usually consists of a number of self contained flats within a complex that has a communal area and telecare system in place. Tenants can use their personal budgets to purchase additional care and support. This type of accommodation is situated all over the county and vacancies are advertised through Homepoint Herefordshire.
Shared Lives Scheme
Shared Lives Carers provide care and support to people in the carer's own home. The Herefordshire Shared Lives Scheme offers long term and respite/short breaks with Shared Lives arrangements, working with adults of any age who wish to live or stay within a supported family-based Shared Lives setting.
