Set up a direct debit

Paying your Council Tax by direct debit

The easiest way to pay your Council Tax is by direct debit. Paying by direct debit allows you to have a choice of four payments: 1st, 10th, 15th and 26th of the month.

You will need to be a current Council Tax payer in Herefordshire to set up a direct debit.

Option to pay by 12 instalments

Payments are usually taken over 10 months of the year. However, if you wish to pay by 12 monthly instalments please email your request to counciltax@herefordshire.gov.uk by 15 April 2023, ensuring you quote your 8 digit Council Tax account reference number. Please note, any request made to pay over 12 monthly instalments may result in your instalment dates being moved to 26th of each month.

Set up a direct debit online

To set up your direct debit, you will first need to register your email address on our website.

After registering your email address you can then login and get access to your Council Tax account to set up a direct debit. Please note that in order for you to do this, we will ask you some security questions about your account along the way.

Once you have set up a direct debit

Payments will be automatically taken from your bank account and there is no need to renew your direct debit each year after it has been set up.

If the amount you need to pay changes or the dates for your payments change, we will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. We do not take any unauthorised payments from any bank account.

Keep track of your payments

Any changes to your Council Tax account can be viewed online if you have registered on our website and have access to your Council Tax account, which is the best way to keep track. You can also register to view any future bills electronically.
