In March 2017, the county secured £8 million of funding from the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership through the government's Growth Deal, to help fund the development of a new university in Hereford.

Launched in 2015 with the support of leading universities, engineers, business people and MPs, the New Model in Technology & Engineering (NMiTE) offers a way for Britain to address its shortfall of 40,000 engineering graduates, and will encourage more women to work in the industry. NMiTE will make Herefordshire a more attractive place for young people to live and study, and will revitalise the county's economy.

NMiTE aims to open its doors to the first 50 students, the Pioneer Cohort, in Hereford in September 2019.
