Education support for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) families
All parents have a legal duty to ensure an effective education for their children. This is normally achieved by children attending school on a full-time basis. The legal duty is the same for all parents, including Gypsies and Travellers. There is a recognition that some families travel for employment reasons. Children's absence from school can sometimes be authorised in these circumstances. The Department for Education has a booklet for advice on attendance.
We provide extra support and help for families who are:
- New Traveller
- Irish Traveller
We can help point you in the right direction for any other services you may need help with, such as:
- Finding school places
- Finding nursery places
- Equality and fairness
- Progress in school
- Language and culture
- Racism and bullying
- School attendance, the law and travelling
- School exclusions
- Special educational needs
We also employ a teacher and a community worker to help and advise families and schools. If you would like help or information, please contact Ben Straker on 01432 261840 or Simon Licence on 01432 383492.
