Reuse and recycling
Before you ask us to collect an unwanted item, can you get rid of it another way? If it's in a good condition, donate it to a charity or reuse organisation who will collect it for free, or use the freecycle website. If you can get it there, you can take it to your nearest household recycling centre.
For large electrical items such as fridges and cookers, the retailer you are buying a new one from may offer a take back scheme for your old item which means you could get rid of the old one when the new one arrives (please note, they may make a charge for this). They may also offer to take away the packaging for the new one.
How to arrange a collection
Large item collections will not take place between 24 December and 4 January. Collections will resume on 7 January.
If you book our collection it will cost £20 per three items (excluding fridges and freezers). You can book a maximum of 12 items per collection. Fridges or freezers will cost £20 per item. Please check the things we can collect and cannot collect before booking. Unfortunately, we are unable to collect from business properties.

We arrange bookings one week in advance and we will ask for a list of items to be collected. You will also need to provide a contact phone number. We will give you the collection day at the time of booking. All collections take place between 7am and 5pm.
Make a change or cancel your collection
You should tell us of any changes to the list of items by midday on the last working day before the collection is due because we will only collect items that are listed. If a collection is unsuccessful due to incorrect information and a return visit is necessary, we may charge for this.
If you want to cancel a collection you must inform us by midday on the last working day before the collection is due. We are unable to provide a refund if you tell us on the day of collection that you want to cancel it.
Please note that Herefordshire Council offices are not open on bank holidays, therefore, if your collection is due on the Tuesday after a bank holiday Monday you need to tell us any alterations or cancellations by midday on the Friday before (excluding Good Friday).
Where to put items for collection
- As near to the normal waste collection point as is practically possible
- We cannot collect from inside a property, building, garage or shed
- All items must be at ground level. We are unable to collect from upper floor flats or balconies
- Access to the items must be clear without any obstacles for collection crews to have to walk or step over or move and without danger of anything falling on them
- Items must be placed outside of gates which are over 4 foot and cannot be seen through into the area the collection crew would need to enter
- We cannot be held liable for any loss, theft, accident or damage caused as a result of the collection process

Householders' duty of care
Important! Householders now have a legal responsibility to make sure that only registered waste carriers collect their waste. Search the Environment Agency public register of those with a waste carriers licence. Anyone offering a waste collection service, such as odd jobbers, gardeners or builders, needs a waste carriers licence, so if anyone takes waste away for you always remember to:
- Ask to see their waste carriers licence and make a note of the number
- Ask for a company headed receipt
- Note down the telephone number and vehicle registration
If your waste carrier does not have the correct licence, and then disposes of your waste illegally (fly tipping), you as the householder will be held responsible and may be liable to prosecution and could be fined up to £5,000.
