SP 13 - Adder

Code
SP 13
Priority species or species assemblage
Adder
Wider environmental benefits
Reducing climate change impact
Species measure 1
Improve public perception of snakes, in particular towards Adders
Species measure 1 description
Negative attitudes towards snake species are highly likely to correlate with detrimental or reduced conservation actions or outcomes. Education and outreach programs should aim to improve awareness and understanding of snakes, in particular Adders: whilst venomous, this species is highly unlikely to cause harm for most people without allergies to snake bites.
Species measure 2
Improve the genetic diversity of populations through creation of new habitats
Species measure 2 description
Adders have experienced steep population declines across the UK, including in Herefordshire where declines are estimated to be up to 98%. Population declines can contribute to isolated populations with small gene pools. Creating new habitats, especially linkages between existing habitat, can aid in adder distribution, reconnect isolated populations, and improve genetic diversity.
